SANA JAVED, THE TV STAR SLIDES INTO FILMS

Sana JavedSana Javed had her first TV venture taste in 2013. She played a major role in the TV drama Mera Pehla Pyar. After gaining acceptability in this drama she continued to show her mettle in more TV plays and within the span of three years she is ready for a debut in films, the first one to be directed by Amir Mohiuddin.
As of now the film does not bear a title. This film however is scheduled to take off in August 2016.And for Sana the most interesting aspect is that the story of the movie revolves around her. More aspects of the story focus on Karachiities basically, and all components help to trigger the imagination.
In this connection Sana also shared that this offer originated two months back and from there on the understanding took a practical shape. When questioned further about additional details, Sana opted to stay quiet and not divulge any thing further.
The confirmation from Sana about the film role led to a natural clarification. She was asked if she was going to bid farewell to TV, now that she had moved to the film world. And the answer was a huge shrug from Sana, who was recently seen in the popular drama Zara Yaad Ker, indicating that she will remain associated with TV. “Television is a medium that I first started off with and I do not plan on leaving it. However, I find films to be a bigger medium and a better platform for actors to project their talent and prove their skill set… It is certainly a dream come true for a girl like me.”
Sana has moved to the film arena as she feels that this will give her a big platform and in this regard Bollywood is no exception, if the career prospects take her there. “I‘ll definitely take it up if it’s a good script. However, it is important that I feel comfortable doing the role that I have been assigned. If I am not at ease with it, I will promptly turn it down.”
A significant aspect of the movie offer to Sana is that the film will rotate around music.

What went wrong with Emraan Hashmi's Azhar?

It's been a week now since the release of the Tony D'Souza directed Emraan Hashmi, Nargis Fakhri and Prachi Desai starrer Azhar, The film which was based on the life of controversial ex-Indian cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin. The film, despite receiving positive reviews, did not perform as expected at the box office. In fact, the film which received immense praise from moviegoers and critical acclaim, performed way below expectations with box office numbers that usually show growth or a sudden jump in collections over the weekend severely taking a hit, while the business on weekdays remained on the lower side. We at Bollywood Hungama decided to understand what exactly went wrong for the film which was well made and told an equally gripping story. For this, we decided to enlist the aid of well-known trade pundits to shed some light on the situation.

Is Azhar outdated today?
Today, with the various formats in which we see cricket being played viz. IPL T20, World Cup, Test, and One Day, there is a whole gamut of new players being introduced almost every season. In such a case, Azharuddin who played for the country years back seldom seems to be a name that crops up in normal conversation. Explaining further Girish Wankhede, (Founder-Entity One Entertainment Solutions) says, "Azhar is not a household name today. If you look at it, today's youth, all are looking up to someone like a MS Dhoni, a Virat Kohli or their likes; they do not really know who Azharuddin was. Maybe in our time, Azhar was a big name to contend with in the sport, but today, he has faded. Because of this, the youth did not connect with the film; instead, it was only the 30+ year olds who have seen the man play at one given time have patronized the film."

However, trade analyst Taran Adarsh differs, "Going by the posts I have seen on my time line, and general opinions I have heard, Azhar was appreciated by both the critics and audience alike. But I am as clueless as anyone else on why this positive response and good word of mouth did not translate into good box office numbers."

Was the film a biopic or not?
Another aspect that affected the overall business of Azhar was the fact that though the makers of the film went on record stating that the film was not a biopic, the audience failed to register it as anything but one. "Azhar was based on a true story and since the real story was already known to everyone, it was obviously difficult to change the audience perception on the said topic. Further Azhar, came across as a whitewash effort when talking about the episode for which the cricketer became infamous", comments veteran reporter Indu Mirani.

Did a tarnished image rub off on the box office?
When basing a film on certain real life happening, there is always a chance that the subject matter will have a positive or negative effect on the end product. In the cast of the film, Azhar's acceptance of his involvement in the scandal that rocked the sporting world seemed to have a negative effect on the film. "The entire story of the film revolved around what transpired during the 90s, and today, no one really wants to know what happened and if they do one cannot just give them a version favouring any single side", reasons Mirani.

Was Emraan Hashmi the right choice to play Azhar?
Apart from the script and story of any film, what managed to entice the audience to theatres is the star quotient. Keeping this in mind was Emraan Hashmi the right choice of actor to play Azharuddin? "Emraan did not do justice to Azhar, his body language and aura did not match or come close to that of Azharuddin, I think this was another point that proved to be a disconnect for the audience" says Mirani.

Though Mirani felt Emraan was not the perfect choice to play Azhar, Taran can't stop raving about the actor's in film performance, "Again from what I have heard Emraan' s performance in Azhar was, by far his best work till date."

At the end of the day, we guess it was a combination of various factors listed above that contributed to the underperformance of Azhar at the box office. But chief among them was the fact the film lost out on the core target audience comprising between the ages of 15- 30, since they either did not know who Azhar was, nor were they excited to learn of a star past his prime. Besides unlike Sachin who even today is looked upon as a cricketing legend, Azhar pales in comparison, thus losing out yet another chunk of the audience. Besides this, the fact the in the film Azhar is seen accepting a bribe, which in Indian morality does not look good certainly rubbed a certain segment of viewers the wrong way. All in all, the underperformance of Azhar at the box office can simply be chalked up to the gap between the film's subject and the audience.

Bollywood bigwigs not so keen on box office clash?

The current year seems interesting as some biggies are avoiding to take their films head-on with others' projects, while others are willing to take the chance.

With one of the biggest clashes of the year between Sultan and Raeesaverted, it seems more Bollywood films are trying to avoid the situations of more than one movie releasing on the same day.
Ever since news broke that Raees and Sultan will release during Eid this year, all eyes were set on the "clash of the titans", as neither of the parties seemed to back off and were consistent in their stand to have a clash.
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan's Raees, however, was pushed to January 26, 2017, avoiding a release with the Dabangg Khan starrer Sultan.
The makers of Raees cited "appropriate showcasing" of a film of "such magnitude" for the push, but the move comes right after SRK's last releaseDilwale underperformed at the box office as it clashed with Bajirao Mastanilast year.
The Raees-Sultan clash is not the only movie event which was averted. Sunny Deol's Ghayal Once Again was initially scheduled to release with Salman's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo last year.
The action-drama was, however, pushed to January 15, 2016. In a surprising turn of events, the film's release was yet again pushed to February 5.
While January 15, 2016 had only one film Chalk N Duster playing, release ofGhayal Once Again on the same day would have meant coming one week after Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Wazir and a week before Akshay Kumar'sAirlift.
The weekend of May 27 was chock-a-block with Naseeruddin Shah'sWaiting, Ram Gopal Varma's Veerappan and Radhika Apte-starrer Phobia.
Earlier, Richa Chadda-starrer Cabaret was also scheduled to release on the same date. The film's release was, however, pushed ahead to avoid an apparent direct face-off with other films. Director Kaustav Narayan Niyogi had said that the film was delayed as the makers "want to do the promotions in a robust manner" and ensure a "dignified release". Apart from Cabaret, another film which was reported to release on May 27 was Anurag Kashyap's Raman Raghav 2.0.
The film's release on the same date would have meant a box office clash between Varma and Kashyap, who were once collaborators but later fell out. RGV's film traces the life of sandalwood smuggler and banditVeerappan, while the Bombay Velvet director's next film revolves around a serial-killer.
On the possibility of a clash, Varma had even said "May the best killer win", but the makers of Raman Raghav 2.0 announced that the film will hit theatres on June 24 instead.
Another clash which has been averted is between Irrfan Khan-starrerMadaari and Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Te3n.
Madaari will now release on July 15, instead of clashing with Big B's film on June 10. Even Nagesh Kukunoor's Dhanak, earlier scheduled to open withTe3n, has been deferred by a week.
The film will now clash with Udta Punjab, which stars Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor Khan, on June 17.
Even though the big SRK-Salman clash has been avoided, the next big box office clash seems between Akshay Kumar- starrer Rustom and Hrithik Roshan-starrer Mohenjo Daro.
Both Rustom and Mohenjo Daro are scheduled to release on August 12.
While Rustom is helmed by 1920 London director Tinu Suresh Desai,Mohenjo Daro marks the return of Ashutosh Gowariker after six years since his last film, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey.
As of now, both directors have said that they are set to open the film on the scheduled dates with no change in the release.
If the Independence Day weekend is packed with these, even Diwali seems to be heading for a major clash.
Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Ajay Devgn's Shivaay are expected to release on October 28 this year, with no news of either of the directors backing off.
The current year seems interesting as some biggies are avoiding to take their films head-on with others' projects, while others are willing to take the chance. Whether more clashes are to be averted remains to be seen.

Bollywood offers were not compelling enough: AR Rahman

Says AR Rahman, who is busy with South movies, and works only on one or two films in Hindi...
AR Rahman was recently appointed as one of the goodwill ambassadors for the Rio Olympics. A scholarship in his name has been instituted in association with the Berklee School of Music. As far as composing goes, while his songs for South films like OK Kanmani have been chartbusters, in Hindi his score for Tamasha got a mixed response. He also recently opted out of composing for Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar. Here, Rahman talks about what drives him, his love for performing live and more...

As a goodwill ambassador of Olympics this year, what will be your contribution?

I want to create good vibes and cheer for them. Also, it’s a coincidence that I recently composed the music for Pele, a film on the Brazilian footballer. So, I would love to see a song from that film being performed at the Olympics.

Any other international film in the offing?

There might be a couple of things, but it’s too early to speak about it. I am finishing the music for Mohenjo-Daro now.

Compared to South films, you work less in Bollywood. Is it deliberate?

No proper movies came to me from Bollywood. The offers that I got were not compelling enough. Also, I was busy with the pre-production of my film, 99 Songs.

You have just released the poster. When is the movie releasing?

Next year. Also, the movie will not have 99 songs though it is called that (smiles). It’s like a fairy tale.

Hasn’t it got delayed?

No. Some movies get made in 12 years, some in 20 years! Movies should be made only when everything else is ready.

Your music for the Tamil film, OK Kanmani, especially Mental Manadhil, was a chartbuster. Will the songs be retained in the Hindi remake OK Jaanu?

Yes, those will be retained and we will also be adding some new songs in it.

Are you happy with the way your music for Tamasha was received?

Tamasha was slightly experimental — both in terms of the movie and the music. That’s what I love about it. I liked the way people received it. Some people loved the music, some hated it, but it was meant to be like that.

Why did you opt out of composing for Aamir Khan’s film Secret Superstar?

What happened was, we had started composing and everything, but around that time my studio (in Chennai) was flooded. My mind was very restless and at that time they had the shoot planned, so I couldn’t do it.

Name one director you will make time for, no matter what?

The last time I did that was for Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionare). I was extremely busy at that point and I knew his musical tastes. If Danny comes here I will definitely do that, I like him a lot.

How are the students who pass out from your music conservatory doing?

Some of them have become composers, some are singers here and abroad and they are winning awards. Some even got invitations from other conservatories who wanted to take our students, but we said, ‘No way!’

Are you planning to open more branches?

I don’t know yet. Even this is a miracle — composing and running this together. Opening more branches means more responsibility, more energy. I want to save my energy, and keep one base. It’s important. It’s more important to do it right, it’s not about replicating it.

Are your children inclined towards music?

I don’t know yet. Time will tell.

You seem to be more involved in tour concerts. What do you enjoy about it?

It’s a very rewarding experience. It gives a whole new meaning to being alive — when you see them smile, and are in harmony with 30,000 people. They have their own stories, and they are cheering, not because I am standing and singing, but because for them it’s a collection of their memories, journey of their lives — the ups and down that are reflected in these songs. It’s a fantastic feeling.

Do you still get requests for Jai Ho (Slumdog Millionare) more than anything else?

Abroad I do, because it is a big hit there. Jai Ho made a huge impact. However, recently in Malaysia, I did not perform Jai Ho. I also get a lot of requests for Dil Se (from Dil Se) It mostly depends on the place. In Vegas, somebody was asking for an unpopular Malayalam song, Mampoove (Yodha). You never know what a person’s listening to, the Internet is making it all possible.

You have achieved everything. What drives you still?

Being a bridge, getting the next generation educated, being instrumental in pushing our own artistes and amazing artistes from abroad to India.

Who is your support system?

My family. They are my spiritual support.
